Can a handyman install a dishwasher in Maryland?

Yes, for a straight hookup. Maryland law lists connecting or installing a dishwasher to existing, exposed household plumbing lines as home improvement (section 8-101(g)), so an MHIC licensed contractor can do a replacement. If the supply or drain lines have to be altered, that part is plumbing. If the dishwasher is hardwired rather than on a cord and receptacle, the wiring is electrician work.

What Maryland law says

Maryland requires a Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC) contractor license for anyone who performs, or offers to perform, home improvement work for a homeowner (Business Regulation Article, section 8-301(a)). Repair and replacement of part of a house counts as home improvement under section 8-101(g), and the statute sets no dollar minimum. A handyman who charges for the work needs the license.

No second trade license is involved. The MHIC license is the whole requirement, and the contractor doing the work should be able to give you the number before the truck is loaded.

How we handle it

A replacement in the same opening is the usual job. We pull the old unit, swap the supply line to a new braided one off the existing valve, run the drain to the disposal or the air gap, level and anchor the new dishwasher under the counter and run a cycle before leaving. A stone countertop with no mounting lip gets side brackets.

A first dishwasher in a kitchen that never had one is a different job, with a new valve, a new drain tee and usually a new circuit. That one is quoted with the plumber and the electrician named on the estimate.

On our side this falls under fixture and appliance installs. The finished jobs with real prices are on the price list.

Questions we get about this job

Does a dishwasher replacement need a permit in Maryland?
A like for like swap on existing lines and a plug in cord does not in the counties we work. A new circuit or new plumbing does.
Will you haul the old dishwasher?
Yes. The price names the haul away line so there is no surprise at the end.
Why does the store installer refuse some kitchens?
Stores skip anything with a shutoff that will not close, a hardwired connection, or a stone counter. Those are the jobs we take, with the plumber or electrician on the estimate when the job calls for one.
