Can a handyman install a mini split in Maryland?
No. A ductless mini split is heating and cooling equipment, licensed in Maryland under the State Board of HVACR Contractors, and the refrigerant line set needs a tech with the federal EPA Section 608 card. The 240 volt circuit is electrician work on top of that. A handyman can set the pad, frame the wall sleeve and run the line set cover, nothing more.
What Maryland law says
Maryland requires a Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC) contractor license for anyone who performs, or offers to perform, home improvement work for a homeowner (Business Regulation Article, section 8-301(a)). Repair and replacement of part of a house counts as home improvement under section 8-101(g), and the statute sets no dollar minimum. A handyman who charges for the work needs the license.
Heating and cooling equipment is licensed under Title 9A of the Business Occupations and Professions Article, the State Board of HVACR Contractors, and anyone who opens a refrigerant line needs the federal EPA Section 608 card. An MHIC license covers none of that.
How we handle it
The online kits with pre charged lines are sold as do it yourself, and the manufacturer warranty on most of them dies the day a licensed installer does not sign off. The HVACR contractor sizes the unit to the room, vacuums the lines, checks the charge and commissions it. That is an afternoon, and the unit lasts fifteen years instead of five.
We do not install mini splits. We refer them to an HVACR contractor on our bench and quote the carpentry and drywall around the install separately when you want one crew for the wall work.
On our side this falls under drywall and plaster repair. The finished jobs with real prices are on the price list.
Questions we get about this job
- Can I install my own mini split in Maryland?
- A homeowner can do work in the house they live in, but opening a refrigerant line without the EPA card is a federal issue, and the county still wants a mechanical and an electrical permit. Most people hire it out for those reasons.
- Do mini splits need a permit in Maryland?
- Yes. A mechanical permit for the equipment and an electrical permit for the circuit, in every county we work. The HVACR contractor pulls both.
- What part of a mini split job will you do?
- The pad or wall bracket, the sleeve through the wall, the line set cover, and the drywall and paint when the install leaves marks. The equipment goes to the HVACR contractor.
